President Mahama seeks to cozen us with the narrative that the expiration of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic marks the end of the anti-LGBTQIA+ bill.
For want of a better phrase, he says since the tenure of the last Parliament came to an end with the coming into effect of the 9th Parliament, same renders the bill worthless.
He went further to state that outgone President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was obligated to append his signature to the bill and since that never happened, it makes the whole exercise of legislating against LGBTQIA+ a wasted enterprise.
Mr. President is being economical with the truth. It is an error of judgment on his part with this angle that the bill failing to have the ex-president’s assent renders it otiose or null and void.
He could have made this point if the bill was not passed by the House. It was actually passed by Parliament and that in itself ends all considerations in the process of crafting the legislation.
President Akufo-Addo not signing the bill doesn’t mean it wasn’t passed. That process ended by the passage of the bill by the House.
There is no need or justification to go back to redo or enact a new legislation to regulate LGBTQIA+. The bill is passed and only needs a presidential assent.
If the President has a modicum of honesty in his system, he would not attempt to shirk his responsibility when it comes to being firm on his campaign promise of appending his signature to the bill.
The simple truth is that, President Mahama is dishonest, as he wormed his way into the lives of the electorate with promises he had no intention of fulfilling.
It is too early to be running away from your promises, Mr. President. You can’t eat your cake and still have it. You must abide by your words!
