Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has created an unprecedented 2.1 million jobs for the youth in the past seven years.
He admits that there is still more to be done as there are many young people in Ghana who are still unemployed due to a rapidly growing youth population.
Dr. Bawumia made this statement during the launch of the Youth Employment Agency’s (YEA) latest job and business support initiative, the Business and Employment Assistance Programme in Sunyani on Monday, December 11.
He emphasized that the program, along with other government initiatives, demonstrates the government’s commitment to job creation.
He further added that this effort has resulted in the creation of more jobs than any government has ever done in Ghana’s history.
The Vice President stated that the Business and Employment Assistance Programme is a testament to the government’s focus on job creation adding, “Unemployment is a real problem in Ghana, and the government’s focus is to improve job creation through the public and private sectors.”
He also mentioned that so far, the private and public sectors have created 2.1 million jobs, with 975 of those by the private sector and 1.2 million by the public sector.
Bawumia believes that this is a hard fact and cannot be disputed and added that he can say with all humility that no government in the history of the 4th Republic has created as many jobs as the current government.
However, Bawumia acknowledged that more work needs to be done to create more jobs for the Ghanaian youth due to the country’s growing youth population.
“We have done a lot in terms of job creation but we still have a lot more to do because the youth constitute the majority of the population.”
“Even though we have recruited 2.1m, we still have to do more and we will do more because there are many more youth who need jobs. About 70% of Ghana’s population is the youth.”
Bawumia, who is also the flagbearer of the NPP in the 2024 elections, also spoke of the importance of the youth to the nation.
“The youth of this country are our greatest resource, and it is our collective duty to ensure that they are well-positioned to make significant contributions to the economic development of our dear nation,” he added.
The Business and Employment Support Programme will help MSMEs grow by supporting skilled workers financially and hiring more youth, through young entrepreneurs, to sustain and expand small and medium scale businesses.
In all, about 10,000 businesses and 20,000 youth, will benefit from the YEA’s programme.
