The MP, leading by example made the call after fulfilling a promise he made to support the hospital’s maternity ward with GHc5,000 after watching a documentary by Joy FM’s Seth Kwame Boateng.

Mr. Patrick Boamah paid the money into an account purposely set up for the project at the Prudential Bank by Joy FM.

The documentary by the Joy FM’s reporter titled “Next to Die” painted a heartbreaking story of how mothers and babies die at KATH each day because of congestion at the maternity ward.

The documentary revealed that, at least four babies die at KATH, the second largest referral hospital in the country.

Patrick Boamah noted that if every MP is donating GHc1,000 towards an immediate expansion of the maternity ward at the hospital, there would be enough beds which can reduce the high mortality rate of mothers and children at the hospital.

He appealed to the public to help complete an uncompleted 43-year-old new maternity ward which had been left to the mercy of the weather.

“I think this is a special project that requires special attention. I believe that MPs and the government must adopt the right strategies. We must do something out of the ordinary,” he said.

“If each MP pays a GHc1,000, it will go a long way,” he added
After airing the documentary, civil societies, the first and second ladies, Rebecca Akufo Addo and Samira Bawumia respectively and the government have made attempts to raise funds to complete the maternity ward.

The Okaikoi South legislator, Patrick Boamah is leading the crusade for the MPs to help complete the project.
