Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has raised an alarming development in Parliament where legislators and staff who tested positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to attend the House.

According to him, the affected people who include journalists have defied communication from the COVID-19 team to stay away and continue to engage in the House.

The Majority leader disclosed this on the floor of Parliament on Friday 12th June 2020 while presenting the Business Statement for next week’s sittings.

He explained that the arrangement after the testing was that anybody who tested positive would not be openly identified but would be contacted by the testing team behind the scenes so that the situation would be managed.

He lamented, “Unfortunately, some people have relented, after contact is made with them they ignore the appeal from the chief, and they visit parliament and they endanger the lives of all of us.”

“The issue is to figure out if you submitted yourself, you tested negative as some of us have. On two occasions I’ve tested negative. That doesn’t mean that I’m out of the woods.”

“If anybody tests positive and comes close to me, chances that I may contract the disease and it goes for everybody.”

“So we want to appeal to honourable members, to the staff and to journalists who have been contacted behind the curtains and who are to submit themselves to the testing team, you are endangering the lives of others. If you are contacted, please don’t come,” he added.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noted that one member who has been contacted by the COVID-19 team has even gotten close to some of his colleagues.

According to him, the MP was engaging other members in spite of the fact that he has been spoken and urged colleagues to be on the watch for one another.
