President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made three key appointments for the top echelon of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The appointments were made following the completion of tour of duty and subsequent retirement of two senior officers.

In consultation with the Council of State, President Akufo-Addo appointed Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah as the new Chief of Army Staff.

Major General Oppong-Peprah succeeds Major General William Ayamdo, who proceeds on retirement.

Until his appointment, Major General Oppong-Peprah was the Chief of Staff at General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces.

That vacancy will, therefore, now be occupied by Commodore Issah Adams Yakubu, who additionally gets promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral.

While Major General Oppong-Peprah’s appointment takes effect from Tuesday, February 18, Commodore Yakubu’s takes effect the next day.

“Additionally, following the completion of the tour of duty and subsequent retirement from the Ghana Armed Forces of Major General Omane Agyekum, the Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS), the President has, on the recommendation of the Armed Forces Council, appointed Brigadier General C.K. Awity as the new Commandant of MATS, effective Wednesday, February 19,” a statement issued by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said.

General Awity is also promoted to the rank of Major General effective Wednesday, February 19.

President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to Generals Ayamdo and Omane Agyekum “for their dedicated and meritorious services to the Ghana Armed Forces and to the nation”.
