An Accra High Court has granted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, GHc15 million bail with three sureties to be appeared again on 28 October, 2025. Two of the sureties will be required to provide collateral, which will be their landed properties within the court’s jurisdiction .
Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, presiding over the case, granted the bail on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after hearing arguments from Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai.
In granting bail, Justice Kocuvie-Tay imposed the following conditions:
- A GHC 15 million bail bond.
- Three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.
- Deposit of all passports with the court registrar.
- Placement on the immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.
- Sureties must submit copies of their Ghana Cards and digital addresses.
- Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.
- Investigators must submit monthly compliance reports directly to the judge.
The NPP Ashanti regional Chairman charged alongside two others in connection with illegal mining activities allegedly carried out by Akonta Mining Limited.
The two other parties involved are Kwame Antwi, currently at large and described as a co-owner and director of Akonta Mining, and Akonta Mining Limited itself.
The accused were charged with six counts that include assigning a mining concession without prior written approval from the Minister and facilitating unlicensed mining operations and many other related mining offenses.
The court also gave the prosecution three weeks to file disclosures. The next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.
