Attorney General Godfred Dame says the offence of high treason, levelled against the ten persons standing trial for their role in an alleged attempt to destabilise the country, is proper.

According to him, the Attorney General will rely on the testimonies of 19 witnesses to prosecute the accused persons.

He explained that it is an offence for people or anyone who embark or attempt such an endeavour.

The ten, including a senior police officer, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, whose initial trial was discontinued, were arraigned on Saturday and are facing new charges of high treason.

Speaking to journalists, the Minister said clearly the offence is properly laid against the accused persons.

“They actually set out to plan on how the President would announce his own overthrow and, in furtherance of that agenda, they set out to manufacture various explosives.”

“They tested those weapons, so you saw a clear physical act on their part, in pursuance of their plan.”

“The Constitution is quite clear that any person, whether acting by himself or in consent with others, who set out to overthrow the government of Ghana commits an offence and that offence is that of high treason.”

Charges levelled against them when they appeared in court included high treason, conspiracy and abetment.

Three High Court Justices presided over the case with Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwey as the Chairperson.

All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to all charges of conspiracy to commit crime namely High Treason felony, High Treason felony and Abetment.

The other accused persons are Dr. Mac Palm, Donyo Kafui, Bright Alan Debrah, Johannes Zikpi, WO II Esther Saan, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Corporal Ali Solomon and Sylvester Akankpewu.

They were initially held for conspiracy to commit treason and treason felony in which they were all granted bail except two who could not meet their bail conditions.

Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli and ACP Agordzo are being tried for abetment of high treason felony.
