The Executive Secretary for Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), Mrs. Ama Gbadago, has challenged Ghanaians to be responsible towards the environment as they celebrate this year’s Exams.

She noted that on occasions like this people generate a lot of waste in their homes, which is sometimes dumped at a wrong place and creating inconvenience and sickness for innocent people.

Mrs. Gbadago made the call in an interview at the 8th National Development Forum organized by National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) on the theme, “Sustainable Management of Ghana’s Sanitation” in Accra.

The ESPA Executive Secretary called on the government to commit itself to solve the sanitation challenges confronting the country.

Sanitation, she said, is capital intensive and therefore the nation must look for sustainable finance mechanism in other to find a lasting solution.

She entreated the general public to continue to think about the environment as the year comes to an end.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon- Cecilia Dapaah revealed there cannot be effective sanitation without water.

She indicated that water bodies are being destroyed as a result of activities such as galamsy and pollution.

She observed that sanitation situation in the country has improved and urged stakeholders in the sector to continue with their good works.

According to her, if every Ghanaian plays their role as far as sanitation is concerned, Accra and Ghana in general would be clean.

The Minister averred that it is not the responsibility of government to go round and clean each and everyone’s home.

“Every citizen should keep their surroundings neat to avoid sickness.  We should be responsible for our environment and pay for the waste we generate,” she stated.

The private sector has contributed millions of cedes to improve sanitation and pushing a lot of innovation into the waste sector that government needs to support.
