Minister-Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sara Adwoa Safo, has put a nail into the supposed inroads the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community is making in the country.

According to her, such practices are criminal and against Ghanaian cultural practices and stressed the issue of its criminality is non-negotiable.

Speaking at the televised sitting of the Appointments Committee on Wednesday 17th February 2020, the Minister-designate and also MP for Dome-Kwabenya was questioned about her views on LGBT and the human rights of people associated with the practices.

According to her, LGBT is an issue when mentioned in the Ghanaian society creates some consternation.

She pointed, however, that the laws of Ghana make such practices criminal.

She said, “Mr Chair, the issue of LGBT is an issue that when mentioned, it creates some controversy but what I want to say is that our laws are clear on such practice. It makes it criminal.”

“Section 104 of the Criminal Code prohibits one from having unnatural carnal knowledge with another person. So, on the issue of its criminality, it is non-negotiable”.

“On the issue of our cultural acceptance and norms, these practices are also frowned upon. So, for me, these are two distinct clarities on the matter and that is what I strongly stand for.”

When questioned whether she would take steps to protect the rights of LGBTs, she stressed that the response she gave on the practice has the utmost clarity of the intention for which it was put.
