Defence Minister apologises to military molestation victims

The Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has rendered an apology to victims of the military molestation and entire people of Wa in the Uper West region.

The Minister described the incident as very unfortunate.

He commented on the incident on the floor of Parliament on July 2, 2021, following a demand made by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu whilst commenting on the incident.

He said the country is building a democracy of which the military is an integral part of, and added that, he has no objection to the decision by Parliament to investigate the incident.

Prior to the apology and assurance given by the Mr. Nitiwul, the Minority in Parliament led by Hon. Iddrisu, had demanded a Parliamentary inquiry into the military molestation of civilians at Wa.

The Minority Leader said the military-civilian relation is currently at its lowest level in the country and added that the military has no moral right to undermine the peace of the country.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu on his part, described the statement made by the Minority Leader on the Wa incident as a matter of urgent public importance which must be looked into.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu who presided over proceedings in Parliament directed the Committee on Defence and Interior of Parliament to investigate the Wa incident and report to the House within one month.
