Minister-designate for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has disclosed that the government has so far spent GH¢840 million on the free water programme.
She also disclosed that about 10 million people have benefited from the initiative in the urban areas but indicated she is yet to receive the figures for those in rural areas.
Madame Cecilia Dapaah disclosed these when she took her turn to be vetted at the public sitting of the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.
The Minister-designate was asked a question from the Presidential Transition Team Report, which indicated the free water from October to December 2020 has not yet been paid for.
The report tasked the Minister to settle the debt within one hundred days.

She explained that the hundred days starts from when she is sworn into office and as a caretaker Minister presently she cannot get the caretaker Finance Minister to help.
She, however, gave the assurance if the Committee approves her nomination she will ensure the matter is sorted out.
The government last year introduced the free water and electricity programme during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic to ease the burden of tariffs on consumers.
The programme was also to ensure the threat of outbreaks of Covid-19 and other diseases like cholera are curtailed effectively.
The programme was initially implemented for three months but was extended until December as the coronavirus disease continues to spread.
