John Dramani Mahama, the NDC Flagbearer for the 2024 presidential election, has reaffirmed his party’s promise to do away with the teacher licensure exams if they win the elections.
He made this statement on Friday during hisqTeacher trainees have described the licensure exams as a money-making scheme that exploits them.
Mr. Mahama questioned the logic of requiring teacher trainees to take another exam after completing four years of rigorous training and assessment in the Training Colleges.
“Why do teacher trainees, after going through four years of training and writing three examinations every year for four years, and writing a final exam need to write a licensure exam to qualify as teachers to teach,” he asked.
He added that the NDC’s priority is to improve the quality of training in the schools and provide them with adequate resources, rather than imposing extra exams on teachers.
“When the NDC returns to power, we will abolish the licensure exams,” he declared.
He also assured the teacher trainees that the NDC would equip the Training Colleges with the necessary facilities and materials so that they could receive proper training and become professional teachers.
