Some Members of the Minority Parliament have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.
They claim that the government has not accounted for the funds allocated to the fight against galamsey in the past years, and has not mentioned it in the 2024 Budget.
Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, who spoke to the media stated that the defunct inter-ministerial committee received $30 million every quarter for three years, and spent over GH¢5 million on consultations with traditional leaders and security agencies on galamsey.
He questioned the outcomes and benefits of these expenditures and called for transparency and accountability from the government.
