The Volta Caucus in Parliament has made a clarion call to the various tribes across the country to, in one loud voice, condemn the open attempt to denigrate the Ewe ethnic group.

According to the Caucus, the blade may be aimed at the Ewe tribe today but tomorrow it could be directed to any other ethnic tribe.

It noted that as a nation, the Ghanaian people need to stand for each other and discourage tribal bigotry and tendencies that can divide the country.

The Caucus made the call in a statement read on the floor of Parliament by Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, member for Akatsi North in the Volta Region in reaction to some published textbook for schools.

The books contain derogatory contents against the Ewe people of the Volta and certain northern tribes and also distorts history with respect to the country’s journey to independence.

The book titled “History of Ghana by Badu Nkansah Publications, Textbook 3,” among other assertions distorts Ewe tradition and history by claiming they vote for their chiefs to be selected and that such vote is influenced by the elders among many other claims.

“It is important to state unequivocally that as a caucus we find the contents of these books most distasteful, backward, unacceptable and most reprehensible.”

“It is part of a grand scheme by certain individuals to deliberately denigrate, vilify, indoctrinate and poison the minds of people against the Ewe ethnic group,” Hon. Nortsu-Kotoe stated.

Every ethnic group in the country, he said, has unique features, characteristics, values and norms and a cultural identity such as traditional deities that are cherished and preserved.

“It is therefore naive for the publication of textbooks to attempt to portray the Ewe ethnic group as a voodoo worshipping people,” he said.

The history of Ghana, he said, cannot be said to be complete without people of the Volta Region who have continued to play a very important role in the economic, social and political development of the country.

He lamented that the Ewe people in Ghana, unfortunately, do not receive the needed recognition as citizens having equal opportunities in the political, economic and social affairs of the country.

The Caucus demanded the Ministry of Education to immediately withdraw all the books from schools and shops and to apply the necessary sanctions on the publishers to serve as a deterrent to others.

MPs from the various parts of the country condemned the disparaging contents of the book and demanded unity of the country and her people regardless of the ethnic tribe or the region as Ghana strives for development and growth.
