The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded scholarships to 500 beneficiaries under its Bright Scholarship Scheme, comprising 300 students and 200 teachers from 45 public tertiary institutions across the country.
The awardees were selected from a pool of 3,691 applicants, with 1,200 shortlisted for interviews. Each scholarship package covers tuition, accommodation, semester stipends, and a laptop to support academic work and digital learning.
In her welcome address at the awards ceremony, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, said the initiative reflects the Foundation’s sustained commitment to education. “You are the garden we are cultivating today, and we expect to reap a harvest of well-prepared students ready to achieve the best in the years ahead,” she noted.
MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, commended the beneficiaries and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to youth development. “Education unlocks opportunities, empowers innovation and creates possibilities for individuals, communities and nations. That is why we established the Bright Scholarship to remove barriers and give brilliant students a fair chance to succeed,” he said.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary Education, praised the Foundation’s sustained investment in education. “It is a perfect example of how the corporate sector can align with government policies to provide equal access to education,” he said.
The event brought together dignitaries from academia, government, MTN executives, and families of the beneficiaries.
The Bright Scholarship, relaunched in 2018 after inheriting the Scancom Scholarship Scheme, has since supported 720 students in addition to more than 1,000 earlier beneficiaries.
The MTN Ghana Foundation, encouraged by its impact, plans to scale up the initiative with 1,500 new scholarships over the next three years.
