The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has expressed shock at an announcement by a government economic advisor of a wage freeze for the next three years.

According to the Association, the announcement is a spat in the face of workers who are contending with numerous price increases in the country.

NAGRAT President, Mr. Eric Angel Kofi Agbe Carbonu, raised this concern at a press briefing ahead of this year’s May Day celebration on the theme, “Economic Recovery in an Era of Covid-19, the Role of Social Partners.”

“We are happy that our various unions have condemned the unacceptable announcement.”

“We also are happy that negotiation on the minimum wage has commenced and that discussions on the base pay will also start soon. A substantial increase in the salaries of workers will help cushion workers from the economic pressure affecting us,” he stated.

According to him, the current economic situation is hitting hard on Ghanaian workers especially Ghanaian teachers and called for an immediate remedy to ameliorate the situation.

“We are celebrating May Day 2021 in the midst of a sudden escalation of prices of goods and services in the country”.

“A bag of cement that used to be bought for GH¢34.00 this time last year, is now being sold at GH¢50.00 while other building materials have generally increased.”

“The numerous fuel price increases have also contributed to the general price hikes that have affected Ghanaian workers in general and the teacher in particular,” he said.

He indicated that there are still challenges with salaries and allowances affecting the Ghanaian teacher.

“We still have delays with the payment of responsibility allowances and salary arrears. Most of the problems are due to delays in transferring information from our District and Regional offices.”

“We call on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to quickly resolve these issues to enhance the morale of teachers,” he added.
