The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a stern warning to 15 television stations, cautioning them against broadcasting inappropriate content.
The NMC, in a statement released on Thursday, disclosed that the reported incidents stemmed from a collaborative effort with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to address content-related shortcomings.
The NMC stressed that failure to rectify these actions promptly would result in severe consequences.
The mentioned TV stations, including Asomafo TV, Adwenpa TV, Eagle TV, Best TV, Energy TV, Diamond TV, X TV, Asomdwie TV, Funny TV, Advice TV, Big TV, Passion TV, Nkabom TV, Seekers TV, and Elephant TV, were reported by the public for airing content that violated media ethics and Ghanaian cultural norms.
The 318 reported incidents included violations related to money-doubling, money rituals, fake lotteries, occultic practices, pornography, fake loan schemes, and fraudulent attempts to extract money.
The commission explicitly instructed the TV stations to cease and desist from such objectionable activities, emphasizing potential severe consequences for non-compliance. The NMC pledged to update the public soon on its decisions regarding the mentioned TV stations.
In a related matter, the NMC addressed concerns involving Onua TV/Radio. A press statement dated November 14, 2023, revealed that Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart were issued a final warning over an inflammatory broadcast. Captain Smart was accused of insulting the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in a recent broadcast.
The Media Commission criticized Captain Smart for making allegations of embezzlement without evidence, deeming the broadcast “dangerous” and “unprofessional.” The commission had previously warned Onua Radio/TV about promoting violence against the state in December 2022, but corrective measures were not taken.
