The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and seven others in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa described Dr. Omane Boamah as “an active and dedicated member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), known for his vocal contributions and commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic and electoral processes.”
“His absence at our meetings will be felt,” the statement noted.
The Commission extended heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the bereaved families, and the people of Ghana, assuring them of its thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of:
- Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
- Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed – Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Samuel Sarpong – National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Samuel Aboagye – former parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
A flower-laying ceremony, which began on Thursday, August 7, is underway as part of a series of national mourning activities leading up to the state burial scheduled for August 15, 2025.
