Police, Goldbod Taskforce busts illegal gold dealers

The Police in the Banda District of the Bono Region has arrested eight (8) persons for engaging in illegal gold exploration and purchasing. An act that is against the Gold Board act, Act 1140 of 2025.

Items retrieved from these persons on site include a cash amount of GH¢23,450, quantities of raw gold and gold dust, mercury, and a lighter used in gold processing as exhibits.

The suspects are Aliu Sali, Ibrahim Wulba, Alhassan Imoro, Sayaba Ziba and Kienu Dobou.

The rest are Nana Alhassan and Oman Tunabu and Wadrago Abdulai.

According to a Police statement signed and released by the Regional Spokesperson, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the suspects were arrested on October 2, 2025 in town called Wewe following intelligence and surveillance.

The statement said the items retrieved from the suspects would be forwarded for forensic examination as part of the investigation, after which they would be prepared for court after further investigation.

In a related development, another six individuals have been arrested by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Taskforce for engaging in illegal gold trading and refining activities without authorisation.

The suspects include an American, and a Moroccan and four other Ghanaians. They were identified as Smart Philander, an American; Nina Elfseky, a Moroccan; and four Ghanaians; Nana Yaw Sarpong Boateng, Sowa Elisha, Evans Arhin, and Arnold Otutey.

The suspects were arrested at the SSNIT Emporium near Marina Mall in Accra after weeks of surveillance and intelligence operations.

The group, according to GoldBod was caught attempting to purchase and assay about 2.1 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately GHC2.2 million, without authorisation as required under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

During the operation, The Taskforce revealed that during the operations, they also found gold refining equipment in the possession of the American suspect, which confirms the suspects’ intent to refine gold illegally within Ghana’s jurisdiction.

The suspects have been arraigned before a court in Accra on multiple charges according the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).
