President John Dramani Mahama is playing semantics with us over the LGBTQIA+ bill. His rendition about why he cannot sign the bill into law, and the other things he said clearly show that he is not committed to doing anything about the bill.
While we recognize the fact that the unsigned bill expired with the 8th Parliament of the Republic, he can initiate a new one to replace the first one.
With over 180 MPs in Parliament, passing such a legislation would be an easy task. Our President is saying something completely different.
He, in essence, is saying that our curriculum should be tweaked to include topics which are culturally and religiously relevant to Ghanaians.
This, he believes, would make render otiose, any other need for a legislation against the activities of those who practice LGBTQIA.
What this means is that, His Excellency John Mahama is not keen on laying any bill, fast-tracking same and when it’s mature for it to be signed into law. He is simply not interested.
There is a reason for his reluctance to bring a finality to this LGBTQIA matter. Our Development Partners would not be happy and that could hurt the economy.
Disbursements expected from the World Bank, IMF and other Western countries maybe gravely affected if Mahama mounts the courage to deal with this matter.
Let me state here that if Mahama even lays the document and it becomes a bill, he would simply task the Justice Sais, Abraham Amalibas and co to sue the Presidency so as to prevent its signing into law. It is a well written script which is being rehearsed by these people.
