Dr. Kwame Pianim is calling for a 36-month ban on politics to allow President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo time and peace of mind to implement his programmes for the country.
According to him, the President currently has 44 months to put together his government and by the time he completes this exercise, he will have barely 36 months to end his term.
The celebrated economist and politician made the call on Saturday while addressing the ongoing turmoil in the ruling NPP following a suggestion by the Majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu that the party should contest the 2024 election with a candidate from the North.
Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Dr. Pianim described the ongoing debate as very unfortunate and stressed this is not the time to launch into who is next in line to lead the party when the current leader has not even effectively begun his term.
He stated it is also in the interest of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and all the other political parties to give President Akufo-Addo a chance to get his people selected and implement his agenda for the country.

He said, “The political system that we put together from 1992 has come to a maturity stage where there are now risks and we don’t want our politics to go back onto the streets.”
“The political class should make sure that politics succeed so it is in the interest of the NDC and the other political parties to give Nana Akufo-Addo a chance to succeed. 36 or 40 months, to get his people selected and to implement his agenda for the country.”
Citing an analogy of installing a chief as an example, Dr. Pianim argued after the installation people return to their businesses and nobody sits under the village tree discussing who will be the next chief when the current one is gone.
Dr. Pianim blamed the media for the concentration on the presidential candidate debate going on in the ruling party and argued the NPP was not formed to be selecting presidential candidates.
The media, he said, is allowing politics to go down the drain and therefore people who do not want to be insulted on radio or their names abused are moving out from the political arena.
