Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has offered a sarcastic assurance to the Majority Group that his side would not pay them back in a ‘Mahama Ayariga Coin.’

According to him, if the Minority chooses to pay the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament in their ‘Ayariga Coin,’ governance will suffer and the people of Ghana whose qualify of life it seeks to improve will also offer.

The Minority, he aside, will continue to pursue the path of cooperation and consensus despite the Majority being the first to draw the dagger against this effort.

Speaking at the opening of an orientation and induction seminar for new members of the 8th Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu stated that the Majority’s decision to vote against Mahama Ayariga’s Motion because it did not emanate from the executive leaves much to be desired as elected representatives of the people.

He said, “You have a Motion moved by a member of the Minority on payment of school fees and you have the Majority group very willing and ready to remind the Minority the motion did not emanate from the President or minister of the President and should therefore not affect the Consolidated Fund.”

“But it will affect the pocket of members of Parliament. So between the Consolidated Fund and the pocket of parliamentarians, which option should they have opted for?”

“What you forgot is that the Motion was emanating from an elected Member of Parliament.”

According to him, if his side were to behave like the obstructionist Minority as being accused, he will consistently remind and demand every Motion gets the 2/3 votes on the floor.

The Minority leader noted, however, that the Ghanaian people voted to make the 8th Parliament very unique with the major political parties having 137 seats each.

“The people of Ghana in my view voted for more consensus and cooperation because they are tired of polarization, divisiveness and petty partisanship.”

“They want us to be able to build some consensus. What that means is that the benefits of the Constitution must be the entitlement of every Ghanaian regardless of political colour,” he said.

The Majority and Minority Caucuses, he said, should therefore share the opportunities and matters relating to society together and assured the commitment of his side to continue to pursue consensus in the interest of the Ghanaian people.

Advising the new MPs, Haruna Iddrisu challenged them to join the Speaker and leadership to set a new paradigm that presents Parliament as a responsive institution that provides accountability and transparency and assists the President and the executive to improve the life of Ghanaians.

He stressed that even as the Minority disagrees with the policy principles of the executive, it will not disagree on every effort aimed at improving the quality of the life of Ghanaians.
