The National Chairman of the PPP, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond has dismissed the move by the Electoral Commission to create 25 new constituencies ahead of the 2020 general elections.

The EC is on the move of creating 25 new constituencies in addition to the already existing 275 which will make the total number of the constituencies 300.

According to Mr Hammond, it is a bad idea to increase the constituencies in the country considering how small the country is.

He said, “We feel it’s a bad idea to expand the 275 constituencies which is a fair representation considering the size of the nation” adding that “two hundred and seventy, five constituencies are enough. I don’t see what benefits we’ll derive as Ghanaians when the constituencies are increased. There will be challenges that will come with the additional 25 which to me is uncalled for”.

He further added that as a country,“we need to take to improve on the welfare of the Ghanaian” and it would be wise “for us to freeze the number of Parliamentarians we have in this country.”

Meanwhile, the Minority Chief in Parliament and Member of Parliament for the Banda constituency in the Northern region has stated that the move by the EC is influenced by President Akufo Addo to create more seats in Parliament for the ruling government considering the fact 17 out of the 25 constituencies to be created will go for the Ashanti region while the rest goes to the other regions.

Speaking to the press, he said, “Before 2018, when the issue about Charlotte Osei became topical, I indicated clearly that the faceless people who asked for her to leave will make some demands. Mr. President has an agenda against the NDC and has asked the EC to create new and additional 25 constituencies to disadvantage others.”
