President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged worldwide collaboration to implement the Resilient Ghana climate action plan at the COP28 in Dubai
The initiative, part of the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP), seeks to reshape Ghana’s forest landscape economy while contributing to global climate goals.
In a high-level keynote address, President Akufo-Addo underscored the imperative for joint efforts in tackling climate change, stating, “The world must unite to garner support for nature-positive action.”
The announced Ghana Country Package, developed under the FCLP, emphasizes three key pillars: advancing nature-based industrialization, fostering a green economy with sustainable jobs, and amplifying climate ambition.
Outlined interventions include promoting sustainable oil palm and cocoa farming models, rejuvenating degraded forest lands, and bolstering eco-tourism.
The projected impact is significant, with an estimated transformation of the forest landscape economy generating approximately US$12,billion by 2030 through compliance and voluntary carbon markets.
President Akufo-Addo articulated the vision for “Resilient Ghana,” stating, “It is a vision to fortify Ghana’s economy, safeguard and restore its abundant forests, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance cocoa production, and position the country as a global leader in sustainable timber, all while creating jobs and livelihoods for its people.”
The Country Package, crafted in collaboration with partners such as the World Bank, the Tony Blair Institute, Bezos Earth Fund, and governments including the USA, UK, Norway, and Singapore, will see implementation with support from both the government and private sector.
Notably, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has already committed US$30,000,000.00 to endorse the initiative.
H.E. Razan Al-Mubarak, the UAE High-Level Champion on COP28, lauds Ghana’s leadership on forests, climate, and nature, affirming the UAE’s commitment to bilateral cooperation.
John Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy on Climate, welcomes Ghana’s ambitious efforts, stating, “The United States is pleased to join partners in Resilient Ghana in supporting Ghana’s ambitious efforts to halt deforestation and restore 2 million ha of degraded lands.”
Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and Environment, H.E. Ms. Grace Fu, confirms Singapore’s dedication to collaborating with Ghana in operationalizing and implementing the initiative.
As leaders assemble in Dubai for COP28, Ghana’s “Resilient Ghana” initiative emerges as a blueprint for sustainable development and climate resilience, gaining support from nations worldwide.
