A former organizer for the Brong-Ahafo Region, Mr Yaw Dabie Appiah Mensah, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to respect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s independent choice for a running mate for the 2024 elections.
Mr Mensah emphasized the importance of allowing Dr. Bawumia the autonomy to choose a suitable partner.
“I believe Dr. Bawumia already has his choice of running-mate, and the NPP must allow him to decide the right person who can pair him to win the general election,” stated Mr Mensah.
He cautioned against any imposition of a running mate, citing potential political repercussions for the NPP, particularly in the crucial 2024 general election.
While acknowledging the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy, Mr Mensah indicated that presidential candidates, including Dr. Bawumia, possess the prerogative to make informed decisions regarding their running mates.
He urged the party to learn from historical precedents and allow Dr. Bawumia the space to choose in the best interest of the party.
“The party believes in Dr. Bawumia, hence we gave him the nod to lead the NPP to victory in 2024. If indeed that is so, then the leadership and the entire people of our great party must allow him to choose his best pair,” added Mr Mensah.
Regarding the upcoming January 27 parliamentary primaries, Mr Mensah stressed the importance of selecting parliamentary candidates aligned with the visions and aspirations of the flagbearer.
He cautioned against endorsing candidates solely driven by personal ambitions, emphasizing the potential impact on the party’s fortunes in the 2024 elections.
“We can’t afford to go to the ballot and choose parliamentary candidates who would narrow our political fortunes.”
“The actions and inactions of some of the aspirants have already made the NPP unpopular in the eyes of the masses at the constituency levels,” warned Mr Mensah, advising delegates to prioritize candidates dedicated to the NPP’s interests.
