The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has expressed displeasure at a recent radio program by a private Monrovia-based radio station, Freedom FM host Sekou V, Sheriff over attack on the Vice President Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor.

The Union warned that, the station’s broadcast has the propensity to undercut the gains that Liberia has made in ensuring media freedom and free expression.

A statement issued by PUL in Monrovia Thursday and signed by its Secretary General, Musa M. B. Kenneh, described as unacceptable the continuous disregard of professional journalism standards and societal norms displayed by the host of the program, Sekou V. Sheriff.

Freedom FM, owned by Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) Sam Siryon, has lately launched a campaign of abuse against some top leadership of the Liberian government but especially on Vice President Taylor led by Sekou, who was respected in the Liberia media circle as one of the fine gentlemen with high standard.

According to PUL, the agenda the station is setting and establishing itself as a symbol of hate is very dangerous and runs contrary to all qualities of civil democratic discourse.

The Union referred to the station’s Wednesday, January 22 and Thursday, January 23, 2020 morning broadcast during which Sekou V. Sheriff rained insults on the Vice President, and stressed such behaviour is uncultured and disgusting.

President of PUL Charlies B. Coffey Jnr. said, “The station’s broadcast has the propensity to undercut the gains Liberia has made in ensuing media freedom and free expression.”

“It is unacceptable that the radio is establishing itself as the symbol of hate.”

The Union warned that if nothing is done about it by the Authorities to change the situation, it will render all lovers of democracy complacent and incite more unruly content from Sekou Sheriff and Freedom FM.
