In the Akuapem South Constituency, a heated controversy has emerged within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as three parliamentary aspirants—Eric Yeboah Apeadu, Eric Samuel Annor-Mensah, and Kwame Ofori Gyau—have called for the exclusion of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Frank Aidoo, from the upcoming parliamentary primary.

The aspirants have raised eligibility concerns and are urging the party’s leadership to establish a clear timeline for the rescheduled primary, which was initially set for January 27, 2024, but postponed.

The issue escalated during a press conference where the aspirants expressed their concerns about the growing crisis in the constituency.

They emphasized the need for prompt intervention to maintain the party’s democratic values.

The controversy began after the primaries were deferred following the withdrawal of the incumbent MP, Hon. O.B Amoah.

The situation was further complicated by Frank Aidoo’s petition to be allowed to contest despite missing the vetting process.

The aspirants criticized the decision to halt the election process due to Aidoo’s petition as unfair and not in line with election regulations.

They stressed that the deadlock poses a risk to their campaigns and reflects wider concerns about the party’s and constituents’ rights to a fair and efficient electoral process.

The aspirants’ demands include a call for the party’s General Secretary, Regional Chairman, and Constituency Chairman to announce a new primary date immediately, stressing that further delays could lead to confusion, crisis, and instability within the constituency.

The constituency’s delegates have supported the aspirants, urging Aidoo to step down from the primary, criticizing his eight-year tenure as MCE for lack of significant achievements and advocating for fresh leadership.
