MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annor-Dompreh, has praised the government’s decision not to evacuate Ghanaian students from China in the early outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) was spot on.
He noted that in a time like that; history should guide all decisions by government.
He observed that countries that rushed to evacuate their citizens from China suffered huge losses and still facing difficulties in how to halt the spread of the virus.
Mr. Annor-Dompreh who is also Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament argued that the government’s decision to evacuate Ghanaians from Kuwait is based on a different premise.
This, he said, is not based on the Coronavrisu pandemic but a matter of immigration
Speaking in an interview, the Chairman noted that Ghanaians need to appreciate the kind of love that President Akufo-Addo has shown post-COVID-19.
The deportation of Ghanaians from Kuwait, he said, was unfortunate but stressed the government should be allowed to go through the processes of evacuating citizens in order not to put the entire country at risk.
He said, “It was most unfortunate that our nationals should be repatriated at this time when the world is sitting on tenterhooks.”
“It is proper for all of us to appreciate that on record the repatriation was not done because of COVID-19. It was done purely on immigration grounds,” he added.
Mr. Annor-Dompreh noted that the government put together a preparation plan in terms of quarantine among others before carrying out the evacuation.
This, he said, was essential otherwise it would have been pursuing a path of clumsiness where the state just goes out there to bring every Ghanaian home.
“We need to respect the sanctity of the protocols issued by the WHO and go through the mill so we do things properly.”
The over 200 Ghanaians deported from Kuwait arrived on Saturday 23rd May 2020 and have since been put under state quarantine.
Minister for Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, disclosed that the deportees tested negative for COVID-19 in that country but indicated that health officials in Ghana have also taken their samples for independent testing.
