A Ghanaian official has urged more Chinese investors to take advantage of the ever-increasing opportunities and bring more investments to Ghana.
Edward Benjamin Ashong-Lartey, the director for investment services at the Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC), made this request late Thursday during a meeting with a Chinese business delegation on a visit to Ghana. GIPC is a government agency responsible for attracting and promoting investment in Ghana.
Ashong-Lartey said Ghana has more investment opportunities springing up in agriculture due to the availability of arable lands, the oil and gas industry, pharmaceuticals, and cocoa processing, among others.
He urged the Chinese businesses to take advantage of Ghana’s position as headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade Area to establish manufacturing industries in the country, from where they could export their products to the larger African market. He said the country was confident in Chinese investors due to their track record in Ghana, as their investments cut across various sectors, including information and communication technology (ICT), where the Chinese tech giant Huawei has remained a reliable partner of Ghana and Ghanaian businesses.
Due to the long-standing bilateral relationship between the two countries, China has become a leading source of foreign direct investment for Ghana.
According to him, these investments were, among others, in the building, import and export, manufacturing, tourism, ICT, agriculture, energy, automotive, and service industries, creating jobs for Ghanaians and contributing to economic growth.
Ashong-Lartey promised that the government would continue to create the enabling environment to make Ghana more attractive to Chinese and other investors.
Welcoming the delegation to Ghana, Tang Hong, president of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, thanked Ghanaian authorities for creating a conducive business and investment environment.
There were many Chinese enterprises in the country, growing very fast and contributing immensely to the country’s economy, said Tang. “Ghana is a key partner of China in Africa and a good place to invest due to attractive policies. Ghanaians are also friendly to the Chinese, so I encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Ghana.”
