Minister-designate for Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, has described as very regrettable a threat he issued to members of the Minority in parliament late night of 7th January.

According to him, the statement was an overreaction to the taunts of colleagues from the Volta Caucus that threw him into a fit of anger.

“I regret it and as I speak before this Committee I want to withdraw that statement unconditionally. I know my constituents are watching me.”

“Mr. Chairman, I am a peaceful man and the use of the word came out of overreaction, which is, of course, one of my negative aspects,” he stated.

During the election of the Speaker of Parliament and swearing-in of MPs on 7th January, the nominee had a standoff with members of the opposition NDC who drummed and called him a thief.

Spotting a white flowing gown in Muslim fashion, Mr. Amewu responded angrily to the taunts of the NDC side and threatened to kill them all.

“I will kill you all,” he stated angrily.

However, addressing the matter before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Mr. Amewu indicated that being a first timer in Parliament, he had expected his entry into to Chamber to be welcomed with applause, especially having won a very difficult seat.

According to him, instead of being cheered by his colleagues from the Volta Region, they rather booed at him together with other members and used some very strong words on him.

“They greeted me with words like ‘Ewi, ewi,’ (to wit thief, thief). It was done jokingly of course but it triggered my anger and I made that unfortunate statement.”

“But I repeat my earlier apology and indicate it was an angry reaction,” he said.

The nominee’s attention was also drawn to an incident when he referred to former President Mahama as a conman in Kumasi for failing to salvage the activities of illegal miners.

Mr. Amewu expressed regret for the use of the word and indicated he would not like to be described as a conman in the same context.

He indicated he is learning from his past mistakes and pledged there will not be a third unsavoury angry reaction from him again.
