“Unfortunately, the late Major Mahama was there for only 20 days as the 3rd Platoon Commander when he met his untimely death”, the Minister said.

According to Hon. Dominic Nitiuwl, the young enterprising military officer, Major Mahama was assigned to duty at Denkyira-Oboasi as the 3rd Platoon Commander to take over on 9th May but sadly, was mistaken to be an armed robber and killed by the residents on 29th May, 2017.

The Defence Minister revealed this when the Managing Director of Sulu Investments Ltd., Mr. Ram Randvan called on him to console the ministry and made donation of 500 pieces of shrink packs and 500 bags of sachets water towards the funeral.

If readers would recall, due to the pollution of the country’s water bodies and degradation of the forest lands, the government of Ghana, led by the Ministry of lands and Forestry has launched an anti-galamsey fight to stop illegal mining in the country.

The honourable Minister hinted that the military has only 21 legal mining sites that they are protecting, and this arrangement was done by the last administration and the military moved into these mining sites last year, 2016 to protect people and properties from galamseyers.

He noted that, the military will intensify the fight against the galamsey, and that nobody is stopping them from mining but it will be regularised to end the pollution and degradation of the water bodies and the lands respectively.

Hon. Dominic Nitiwul also debunked rumours that the military has being there to protect the galamsey miners through which Major Adam Mahama lost his life.
