Minority condemns growing intimidation against gov’t critics

The Minority in Parliament has condemned what it says is a systematic plot to intimidate people who protest the dangerous path the Akufo-Addo government is taking Ghanaians.

They argued the number of invitations recently handed to certain political actors in the country portend the despotic tendency of the NPP government.

The Minority stressed the public arrest of Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei by security operatives, which was captured on video is a dangerous signal heading into the December 2020 elections.

What happened, he said, is reprehensible and condemnable and warned no amount of intimidation will silence the voices of Ghanaians.

“It started with Major Boakye Gyan when he warned the conduct of the Electoral Commission could spell doom for the country and that it could ignite strife based on his analysis of the existing political tension.”

“How did the security agencies under the leadership and watch of President Akufo-Addo act? They immediately arrested Boakye Gyan, extracted a statement, and cautioned him.”

“Next was Bernard Mornah, the PNC chairman made similar statements. He admonished the EC the path they are taking has the potential to degenerate into violence and if care is not taken violence may erupt at the various polling stations across the country if the EC decides to compile a new voters’ register.”

Mr. Agalga stated the analysis Bernad Mornah made immediately landed him in the grips of the police and argued there appears to be some amount of selectivity when it comes to dealing with matters of this nature.

According to him, Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahene publicly threatened that if anybody attempts to disrupt the compilation of the new register they will be beaten up mercilessly, and killed.

“How did the state act? These words came from the lips of Nana Obiri Boahene. As we speak no invitation has even extended to him. Is it because he is the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP,” he queried?

“That is the kind of selectivity I am talking about.”

The Minority noted that President Akufo-Addo’s credentials as a human rights advocate have diminished and thereby putting his entire reputation on the line.

“A lot of things have happened in our country. Violence and mayhem were visited on innocent citizens during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.”

“The kidnapping of the four Takoradi girls today remains a mystery. Our security agencies have not been able to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators after we were assured they will bring back the girls.”

“So when we see the security agencies spend a lot of time clamping down on political opponents because people decide to exercise their human and constitutional rights and speak against happenings that are likely to plunge this country into chaos, you go after such persons because you wield the coercive power of the state.”

“It is a very dangerous development that we must all take very serious note of,” he added.
