MPs commend Prez. Kufour ahead of his 80th birthday

Presenting a statement on the floor of the House to commemorate the 80th birthday celebrations, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah indicated that government should institute a policy that will be empowered to set up a foundation which will support past and sitting presidents.

“The number of things they do are enormous and their policies can go a long way to change the destinies of people” he said in an interview.

Mr. Boamah also recounted the former president’s tenure when he stated that under his presidency, Ghana witnessed the fastest growth in its history; attaining a lower middle-income status by 2006 much earlier than the projected year of 2015 as envisaged under her own development agenda.

He also commended the former president for introducing the health insurance scheme, with free maternal care for pregnant women, under which about 56percent of the population was registered in its early years.

“Under his watch, Ghana experienced a very robust infrastructural development in the areas of roads, schools and hospitals, among others. Some of the road infrastructures are Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, Asafo Interchange, Sofo line interchange, Pantang-Manfe Road,N1 Road and Achimota-Ofanko Road” the statement captured.

The Member of parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Hajia Alima Mahama revealed that former president Kufour established the Gender Ministry and that women of Ghana are most grateful to him.

“President Kufour is legendary, outstanding and deserved to be supported by every Ghanaian” she said.

On his part, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem described the former president as a “good gentleman”, stressing that he endeared himself as a true statesman when he left office.

Member of Parliament for Madina, Abubakar Saddique Boniface said he saw former president Kufour “as a total symbol of the elephant”.

“He impacted many people and changed their lives and deserves to be celebrated everyday” he added.

Member of Parliament for Banda and first deputy minority whip Ahmed Ibrahim indicated that a leader must be remembered for his legacy and reckons former president Kufour is well remembered for his “human centered approach” who needed to be celebrated.
