National Security officials have halted the “Fixing the Country Movement” from picketing outside former President John Mahama’s office in Labone, Accra.

The group was protesting against the lack of action from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) regarding the Airbus scandal.

The Ministry of National Security deemed the planned picketing as a dangerous precedent for private individuals’ offices being targeted, even if they were seeking public office.

Therefore, they held a meeting with the movement’s leader, Ernest Owusu Bempah, and other members, and convinced them not to go ahead with the exercise.

The Ministry of National Security disclosed that the demonstration was called off due to the threats it posed to the State’s security.

They also urged the public not to stage any such demonstrations and stated that law enforcement officials would be deployed on the scheduled day of the demonstration to ensure strict adherence to the directive.

The Fixing the Country Movement had notified the Ghana Police Service of their intent to exercise their constitutional rights under Article 21(1)(d) and (f) of the 1992 Constitution to picket outside former President John Mahama’s office on 23 November 2023.

The group had rescheduled the event twice before.

According to the convener, the planned protest was intended to reflect the group’s discontent with the lax investigation into the Airbus corruption scandal.

They believe that Mr Mahama has a lot of questions to answer and that the scandal cannot be swept under the rug.
