The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said the party is calling for the resignation of the Deputy Chair of the Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Dr, Bossman Asare.
According to the party, his continue stay in office creates fear for them and Ghana going into the 2020 general elections.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia said his party think Mr. Bossman’s resignation or removal will do a very good help to the country’s democratic stability
Speaking on Joynews’ PM Express, the NDC scribe said he has never seen a referee who condemns a team before going into match that involves the same team.
They accuse Dr Asare of taking a biased position against the NDC when he publicly stated that the NDC is a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
“Let me make this very clear…if there is anyone who is becoming a threat or if you like an existential threat to the democracy we are practising in our country then I would rather say it has been the posture of the NDC.
“Because, since this new commission took over, we’ve noticed some of the things that have transpired…we remember before Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election, the allegations were rife that the voter register is bloated…” Dr. Bossman said on Citi FM.
According to him, the party also made lots of other allegations so he does not understand how the party would point accusing fingers at the EC Chair, Jean Mensa that she is a threat to the democracy of the country.
But Mr. Asiedu Nketia said by this comment, Dr. Bossman is conflicted and not fit for his position.
“He has put himself in a position that he cannot be trusted to adjudicate in any election in this country and the earlier he leaves his position, the better for the peace of the country.
“…the EC is going to be the umpire so if the Dep Chair says NDC is a threat to democracy in Ghana, then he would want to do everything to make sure that NDC does not get to power otherwise we will destroy the democracy of the country. That is the implication of what he said,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia said.
According to him, with electoral dispute being the leading cause of conflicts in the subregion, it is proper to nip it in the bud.
“Some of the disputes will emanate from lack of trust in election administration body and other causes but this is clear that the umpire has placed himself in a compromising position…it is difficult for anyone in our party to have confidence in Dr. Bossman,” he stated.
The NDC General Secretary noted that if he does not resign, “it will not be about the NDC but whether Ghanaians will have confidence that any pronouncement coming from the EC will be upheld.”
But the Deputy EC Chair has refused to respond to the allegations saying he is concentrating on delivering a credible registration exercise, and what he said was in context.
