Parliament shuts down: 17 MPs, 151 staff test positive for COVID

Parliament is taking a three-week break to stem the tide of the coronavirus pandemic after 17 MPs and 151 staff and ancillary workers tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin who disclosed this in a formal communication to the House on Tuesday indicated that in consultation with leadership, the House is adjourning from Wednesday, 10 February 2021 to Tuesday, 2nd March, 2021.

The Speaker, over the past weeks, took some measures to halt spread of the virus in the legislature including directing the House to sit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The House further decided that not more than one-third of members would attend Sittings in the Chamber at any given time.

According to the Speaker, due to the upsurge of the Coronavirus infection following another round of testing that has seen the number of infected MPs jumping from 15 to 17, and number of the affected staff going from 71 to 151, the House will take a three-week break.

Meanwhile, the Appointments Committee is commencing consideration of His Excellency the President’s ministerial nominees on Wednesday 10th February.

“It is hoped that within this period of adjournment, the Appointments Committee would commence consideration and public hearing of the President’s nominees for Ministerial appointments.”

“By the end of the three weeks, the Appointments Committee would have submitted reports on the referral for the consideration of the House.”

According to the Speaker, Members of the Appointments Committee, the Clerk to the Committee and other supporting staff who will be engaged in the task of considering the nominees are exempted from the break.

He urged members who will continue to work in the House to comply with the strict COVID -19 protocols and regulations.

He directed members and staff to also re-submit themselves to the Parliament Medical Centre for re-testing after two weeks from Wednesday 10th February, 2021 to ascertain their status before the resumption of the House.

Meanwhile, Parliament will continue with the weekly disinfection and sanitization of its premises and precincts.
