The People’s National Convention (PNC) has issued a strong call to action for women across Ghana, urging them to consider demonstrations and even the boycott of the 2024 elections if the Affirmative Action Bill is not passed beforehand.

This drastic measure, according to the party, is a response to the ongoing neglect of women’s representation in politics by the major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The PNC, in a statement on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries and the huge number of women MPs who lost their bids, stressed the critical role women play in the nation’s development and the importance of their full integration into the political landscape.

“Ghana cannot achieve its full potential for development until the 50.7 per cent of females are fully integrated into our political mainstream,” the party emphasized, pointing to the significant proportion of the population that women represent.

In addition to calling on women to stand up for their rights, the PNC has extended its appeal to various influential groups in society.

The party is urging Civil Society Organizations, the media, academia, religious leaders, and experts to redirect their efforts towards pressuring the NPP and NDC to enact the Affirmative Action Bill.

This legislation, it says, is a crucial step towards ensuring greater female participation in Ghana’s political process.

The PNC’s call for potential election boycotts and demonstrations signifies a heightened level of urgency and activism in addressing gender disparities in Ghanaian politics.

This move reflects a growing impatience with the slow pace of progress in promoting gender equality in the political arena and a demand for immediate action from the country’s leading political forces.
