Some youth of the Upper West region are pleading with the appointing authorities of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government not to forget their brother, Bright Bakye Yelviel Baligi, Member of Parliament for Lambusshie for an appointment in the government.

The youth, through the Regional Communication Team are saying Dr. Bright Bakye Yelviel Baligi needs to be recognized for his hard work for the party, and also ‘fighting’ to win the seat in his second attempt for NPP, which saved the party from being the Minority in Parliament.

Dr. Bright Bakye Yelviel contested the seat in 2016 but lost to National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Edward K. Dery.

According to the Spokesperson, Nana Sadat, they confronted Mr. John Boadu, the NPP’s chief scribe when he toured the region on a national assignment with some National Executives of the party, and he assured them that he will make sure their Member of Parliament is duly rewarded and adequately equipped to enable him make the needed impact in the life of his constituents to retain the seat in 2024.

They said Dr. Yelviel Baligi, having served as the party’s secretary and with his relations with the grassroots, President Akufo-Addo in 2016, then flagbearer, asked him to step down to contest the parliamentary elections because he knew Dr. Yelviel Baligi could win the seat for the party.

Though he did not win in the 2016 elections, he won in 2020. The youth say they don’t understand and are not happy that the President will constitute his government and sideline Dr. Yelviel Baligi, from the Upper West, Dambo’s home region.

Speaking to www.frontpageghana.com via phone, Nana Sadat said, “We are waiting for the President to give Dr. Yelviel Baligi a position in his government as a ‘thank you’ to the Dombo family of the Upper West again for Dr. Yelviel Baligi snatching the seat from the NDC despite not been an appointee and against all odds.”

“Prior to the elections, our Dr. Yelviel Baligi was in every way undermined, written off and frustrated, yet he defied all odds and won the seat. We will not be happy and will never forgive the party if the young legislator is left to his faith by the party and government, and by that we may unfortunately lose the seat,” the spokesperson said.

They said Dr. Yelviel Baligi was contested by his own party member, John Doughr Baloroo, as an Independent Candidate who they alleged was sponsored by the sitting DCE.

The youth warned that failure to appoint him by the President indicates that both the President and party are not interested in the seat, and that they just used him in Parliament to get their numbers, and warned that when the time comes, they will advise themselves.

The Regional Communication Team seems to have prioritized the issue of Dr. Baligi in the said encounter with Mr. John Boadu, the party’s General Secretary than the welfare of its members.

However, according to them, “It was necessary and deserving under the circumstances and we promise to keep reminding him till our problem is addressed,” he added.
