National Security Minister-designate, Mr. Ken Dapaah, has expressed concerns about the involvement of more State Security personnel aiding illegal migrants and smugglers on the Ghana-Cote D’Ivoire border to smuggle goods from Ghana and vice versa.
According to a Memo signed by the National Security Minister-designate to the Interior Minister, also designate and cited by this news portal, they have gathered that personnel at Abaase and Semanye checkpoints comprising the Police, Immigration, Customs and the Military are extorting monies from illegal migrants and aiding them to smuggle goods in and out of the country.
This personnel, the letter states, charge smugglers between CFA1,000 and CFA10,000.
“It was further gathered that Security personnel deployed at unapproved routes do not conduct thorough profiling and inspection of goods, which has dire security implications,” the letter said.
Though the country’s land borders are closed, the Memo states in part that there has been some observation of commercial vehicles, notably OA Transport and Diplomat Transport Companies, which stopped using the Elubo-Afloa route, having resumed operations and plying the route with more than four buses every night.
It further states that Ford and the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) have also witnessed an increase in patronage.
