Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has made a passionate call to the Ministry of Trade and Industry to trash differences with Benin in the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Liberation Scheme.

According to him, Ghanaian companies that export products to the Benin market under the scheme have been facing major challenges.

Mr. Boamah, in an interview with this portal, indicated that he has received a number of complaints from some of these companies that export to Benin, for the past six months, has stopped implementing the scheme.

The situation, he said, is affecting the exports of these companies to that country, which is a very big market for them.

He said, “This is making them less competitive because their customers have started to look elsewhere for the products, which is affecting them locally.”

Hon. Patrick Boamah noted that this situation has implication for sustainable jobs in Ghana and stressed that job losses should not be entertained anywhere.

“As a member of Parliament, I am sure some of my constituents work in mass industries like Interplast and the rest.”

“I am therefore urging the Ministry of Trade, policymakers and stakeholders to ensure whatever it takes for them to have that kind of negotiations with colleagues and trade partners in Benin is done immediately to protect union jobs and to safeguard Ghanaian industries who do business in Benin,” he added.
