The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that transport fares will be substantially increased.
This is due to the implementation of the Emissions Tax, which comes into effect on Thursday, February 2024.
According to the Ghana Revenue Authority, a levy has been imposed on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on internal combustion engines.
The purpose of this new tax is to encourage the use of green energy and eco-friendly technology to manage the environment and reduce pollution levels in the air and water.
The government hopes that this move will help combat greenhouse gas emissions.
However, the GPRTU warned that the levy will have an adverse effect on their businesses.
The Industrial Relations Officer of the Union, Abass Imoro, recently stated they will soon release the fixed increment rates.
He mentioned that the reason for the levy was to raise funds for the country, but it is also important to consider the needs of those who work and support their families.
He emphasized that everyone who works has a goal to achieve in the future, and it is not feasible to buy something for 1 Cedi and sell it for 80 pesewas.
The Union will include the levy in their new calculations and will share the burden with their members. They plan to release the new rates soon.
