The Suma Traditional Area in the Bono Region has conferred a chieftaincy title on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in appreciation of his role in advancing Ghana’s democracy.

The Speaker was installed as Nana Adasuoko I by the Paramount Chief Odeneho Dr. Afram Brempong III on Saturday 25th November, 2023, during the Akwantukese festival.

The Paramount Chief had earlier visited the Speaker in Parliament in July to extend the invitation.

Addressing Members of Parliament on Monday November 27, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed his gratitude to the Suma Traditional Area for the honour and said it was a recognition of the institution of Parliament and its members.

He assured them that he and his colleagues would continue to uphold the values, norms, traditions, and principles of the Ghanaian people.

He also revealed that the Paramount Chief had donated a piece of land for the Institute of Parliamentary Studies and urged the House to construct a campus there to educate young people on the significance of Ghana’s democracy.

The Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, who accompanied the Speaker to Suma, congratulated him on the coronation and said it would inspire aspiring politicians to emulate his good virtues.

He also acknowledged the respect that the Speaker had earned from various traditional areas and cultures across the country.

Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu applauded the Suma Traditional Area for its recognition of the role of Parliament in the governance architecture of the country.

According to him, people are increasingly becoming aware of the role of the legislature in governance and indicated that previously it was difficult for people to appreciate what MPs do in Parliament.

“The fact that this recognition is not coming from chiefs from your own backyard but another part of the country lends credence to what is being done here,” he said.

The Majority leader suggested Parliament should organize a short ceremony to officially welcome Speaker Bagbin to the House
