Be mindful of what you report, people accept it as ‘gospel truth’ – Jeo Owusu

Mr. Osei Owusu hinted that he once read a report published in a popular newspaper in Ghana and had believe and follow suit to invest in a bank, but the bank collapsed a few months after he made the investment.

Mr. Osei Owusu, also a Member of Parliament for the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti region said this as a Guest of Honour at a one-day capacity building workshop organized by Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) for the Free Zones Authority to sensitize members of the Corps about its operations and mandates.

He asked the media to help the Ghana Free Zones Authority to inform and educate the public on how they can apply to become a free zone company and enjoy the immense benefits.

This was part of the initiatives by the Executives of the PPC for their members to get firsthand information and understand how certain State Agencies operate.

In her presentation, Mrs. Kristine Lartey, Head of Legal at the Free Zone Authority noted that the proposed timeline to amend the Free Zone Act 1995 (Act 504) will be done by the third quarter of the year if all goes on well.

She noted that, the proposed amendments is aimed at addressing the gaps in the Act, and bring it up to par with developments in the free and special economic zone regimes worldwide as the Act has seen no major amendments since its promulgation in 1995. One key area of the proposed review is to confer on the GFZA, a corporate identity with the ability and power to operate more independently as a legal entity with some degree of autonomy.

The Head of Estate at the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mr. Kwame Nsiah Asante also appealed to Chiefs to make lands available, stressing that when these lands are developed as Free Zones enclave it will bring more investors as well as enticing more companies to becomes free zone companies.

The Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Nana Agyeman Birikorang, in his welcome address commended the Ghana Free Zones Authority for making their Resource Persons available to sensitize the press about their operations.

He was of the view that the training will enhance on the reports of the press whenever issues involving the GFZA comes to the floor of the House.

The one day capacity building workshop was under the theme: The Parliamentary Reporter as an effective link between Parliament and the public.
