Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament have given the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, an ultimatum to be present at the central bank’s facility by December 18th to receive a petition calling for his resignation.
The Caucus is alleging that the Governor’s economic mismanagement has pushed over one million Ghanaians into extreme poverty.
The Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson reiterated the call for the Governor’s resignation in an official letter addressed to him.
The Minority Caucus has emphasized the urgency of a change in leadership to start a financial sector restructuring.
On October 3, 2023, the Caucus, supported by civil society groups and numerous Ghanaians, protested outside the Bank of Ghana’s head office.
The members demanded not only the resignation of Governor Addison but also his two Deputy Governors and the entire board of the central bank.
Among the allegations, the Caucus accuses the central bank’s leadership of failing in crucial areas such as managing inflation and preventing the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi.
They further assert that the Governor oversaw the collapse of the country’s financial sector, resulting in substantial losses for banks and unfavourable interest rates detrimental to business growth.
The letter specifies the reasons for their demand, citing issues ranging from significant financial losses to the alleged illegal printing of currency and the depletion of external reserves.
