The Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has called for serious introspection and commitment among African leaders toward addressing the numerous challenges facing children across the continent.

It urged all stakeholders to continue to enhance their actions for the betterment of all children.

The call was contained in a statement to mark the AU Day of the African Child.

The ‘Day of the African Child’ (DAC) is observed on 16th June, to mark the 1976 students’ uprising against an apartheid skewed education in Soweto, South Africa.

Some member countries of the African Union (AU) annually observe the day in honour of those students and also to push towards the realization of the rights and welfare of children.

This year’s localized theme is, “Mainstreaming Agenda 2040 into the National Development Framework” which is in line with the continental theme “30 years after the adoption of the Charter: accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children “Agenda 2040: Fostering an Africa fit for children” is the framework to guide child protection interventions in the Africa region.

The celebration, according to the Ministry, aspires to create awareness of the need for all citizens to participate in the promotion and protection of the rights of children and expected to be carried out at both Regional and National levels.

A number of activities have therefore been outlined to mark the celebration.

To start, special Video Messages from the Management of MoGCSP and other Key Partners about the programme will be circulated across social and other media houses from the 14th to 18th June 2021.

Alongside this, there will also be the Sharing of special posters on the aspirations of Agenda 2040.

On the 15th June 2021, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo will make a statement on the floor of Parliament about the programme.

On the same day, a selection of Ghanaian children will spend some time with the Honourable Minister of MoGCSP to discuss the theme and related issues about children.

The programme will finally be climaxed on 16th June 2021 with a Panel Discussion by some selected children on ways the Agenda 2040 aspirations can be mainstreamed into the National Development Framework.

MoGCSP acknowledged all stakeholders who keenly take children’s issues at heart and ensure that their rights are protected.

“We must all get involved or continue in the sensitization of the general public on the ten (10) aspirations of “Agenda 2040” as well as in the awareness creation towards citizen participation in the promotion and protection of the rights of children.”

“From all of us at the Ministry and our hardworking partners, we wish all Ghanaian children a pleasant “Day of the African Child,” the statement said.
