Gov’t engage local manufacturers on COVID-19 vaccine

Mr. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, Minister of Health designate, has told Parliament that Government of Ghana has started talks with the local manufacturers to see the possibility of manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines in Ghana.

Mr. Agyeman-Manu disclosed this on the floor of Parliament when he was contributing to statements in the House by three other Members of Parliament on Friday, January 29, 2021.

The statements were made by Laadi Ayii Ayamba, Lydia Seyriam Alhassan and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Hon. Members of Parliament for Pusiga, Ayawaso West Wuogon and North Tongu respectively.

According to him, Government over the past three days has been meeting with the manufactures, and added that the time for manufacturing of local vaccines is now.

“We are doing quantification of numbers and we are looking at sources of funding to be able to do what will bring us the vaccines as quickly as possible,” he assured.

The Minister of Health designate, also MP for Dormaa Central agreed to the spread of the disease had become worse in the wake of the new variance in Ghana.

He also said COVID is spreading so fast and called on Ghanaians, and especially transport unions to continue to contribute to government’s effort to stop the spread.

“Close to about 20 million face masks had been procured by the government and they were being distributed to various educational institutions across the country”, he told House.

“Also President Nana Akufo Addo has directed that the cost of COVID-19 antigen test at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) be reduced from $150 to $50,” he added.

This according to the Health Minister designate, is in response with the protocols of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) which called on member states to review and cap the cost of the test at $50.
