The Minerals Commission has stated it has not received any requests, either verbally or formally, from FGR Bogoso Prestea Limited regarding the transition of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine into care and maintenance.

This clarification arises amidst circulating rumours and reports claiming such a request was made to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The Commission emphasized that FGR, which currently operates the mine, has not communicated any intentions to change the mine’s operational status.

The Commission’s statement expressly denied receiving any formal application or request from FGR to place the mine under care and maintenance, dispelling any doubts.

FGR Bogoso Prestea Ltd, with Blue International Holdings Limited as its principal shareholder, currently controls the Prestea-Bogoso Mine, following a transfer from its previous management by Golden Star Resources Limited. This change marks a significant shift for the mine, an important entity in both local and national mining sectors.

Although there has been no official request for care and maintenance, the Commission acknowledged the halting of mining activities at the site in December 2023, citing operational difficulties. In August 2023, the Commission issued a notice to FGR about potential violations of the Mining Lease and sought justification for not terminating the lease. This notice period ended in December 2023, and the Commission is now preparing recommendations for the Minister’s next steps.

The MInerals Commission reaffirmed its commitment to managing the nation’s mineral resources with effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring the protection of mining investments, especially concerning the Prestea Bogoso Mine.

This commitment extends to job preservation, local economic development in Prestea, community growth, and revenue generation for the benefit of Ghana’s population.

The fate of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine continues to be a significant matter for various stakeholders, including the local community, the broader mining industry, and the national economy.
