Minority leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has condemned strongly what he described as subtle threats to religious freedoms in the country.

According to him, these threats to religious freedom are an inherent threat to the peace and cohesion of the country.

He lamented the fact that these threats are emanating from none other than some section of religious leaders.

The Minority leader expressed these concerns on Tuesday 25th May 2021 during the first sitting of the second meeting of the first session of  Parliament.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu cautioned, particularly religious leaders, not to do or engage in any conduct or action that will jeopardize Ghana’s standing as an oasis of peace and a country noted and respected for peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance.

The 1992 Constitution in Article 21, he said, guarantees the right to freedom of conscience including freedom of religion and belief.

“We should just respect that and observe those rights. Every Ghanaian is entitled to those benefits,” he stated.

The Minority leader’s caution comes on the back of the Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School fiat that prevented Muslim students from observing the just ended Ramadan fast.

The issue attracted anger of the Ghanaian Muslim community particularly after some Christian religious organizations and leaders declared support for the school’s action.

The situation threatened to escalate after some made preposterous claims to being the majority and therefore reserved the right to dictate what happens in the country.

This compelled some interactions between leaderships of the two dominant religious groups and the involvement of the government to address the issue.
