The majority leader in Parliament has denied reports that money has been given to Members of Parliament for purposes of fighting the coronavirus pandemic in their constituencies.

According to him, contrary to rumors being peddled on social media, no MP has received GH¢120, 000 or any amount of money for such purpose.

“No such amount has come from anywhere; either from the Common Fund Administrator or from any quarters. Nobody has been given any such amount.”

“I am just stating it for the avoidance of doubt and also to give credence to what the Minority leader has already stated,” he stated.

He stressed there is no iota of truth in the report and that no member has been paid GH¢120,000 to confront the COVID-19 pandemic in his or her constituency.

Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated that these in response to questions arising from presentation of the Business Statement for Thursday 30th April 2020.

Parliament resumed Sittings of the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Seventh Parliament following a directive from the Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye.

The House suspended sitting on 17th April 2020 contrary to the expectation of adjourning Sine Die in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for MPs to be on standby to address exigencies that might arise.

The Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, had raised concerns about rumours on social media that Members of Parliament have been paid some amount of monies for the purpose of the COVID-19 fight and urged the Majority leader to address the report.

According to him, claims that MPs have received GH¢120,000 must stand in denial because it is not true.

“Mr. Speaker, it is inaccurate, is misleading, is erroneous and is only meant to open Members of Parliament to ridicule and to all kinds of demands by their constituents.”

He argued that the executive side of government is working with the District Assemblies and not MPs in the disbursement and expenditure of monies meant for the purposes of COVID-19.
