The Ghana Police Service is not well equipped to provide personal security to Ghanaians who needed protection, according to National Security Minister-Designate, Albert Kan Dapaah.

The Police Service, he said, have never had the full complement of logistics and personnel to provide the most effective policing in the country.

The Military, he said, therefore provides support by being assigned as personal details for individuals who have claimed that their lives are in danger.

Mr. Kan Dapaah disclosed these at the televised public sittings of the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday when he took his turn to be vetted.

According to him, the military does not only provide protection for ministers of state or high-profile members of society but also ordinary Ghanaians when the need arises.

He disclosed that an unnamed journalist continues to receive personal protection from soldiers and indicated the military will continue to provide such security support whenever the need arises.

Ranking member of the Committee and the Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed concern whether the military taking over guard duty is not a vote of no confidence on the police whose responsibility it is to provide security and ensure law and order.

The Minister-designate stated that assessments are carried out on the situation before soldiers are detailed to offer protection when it is determined such duty would require the use of certain equipment not readily available to the police.

He said, “As at now we cannot do with the police because at times we have to use certain equipment, which will not be readily available to the police.”

“Clearly the Ghana Police and other security agencies are not well equipped in terms of equipment and men. They have never had the full complement of providing the most effective policing in the country.
